Imagine a country that transforms its landscape with visionary projects and becomes a magnet for global tourism and investment. This is the ambitious journey Saudi Arabia is on, as it unfolds its Vision 2030 through an array of giga-projects designed to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil. From the stunning developments of Qiddiya to the futuristic city of Neom, the Kingdom is setting the stage for an economic renaissance.
Unveiling the Future: Saudi Arabia’s Giga-Projects
Saudi Arabia’s entertainment sector is seeing unprecedented growth. In a strategic move, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has announced Diriyah as the fifth giga-project, joining the ranks of Neom, Red Sea, Qiddiya, and Roshn. These projects are not only about grandeur but also about generating substantial financial returns and economic stimulation.
The nation is also investing heavily in smaller yet significant projects. For instance, the Saudi Entertainment Ventures, a subsidiary of Qiddiya, is channeling $13 billion into developing 21 entertainment destinations. These include AlUla, the world’s largest living museum, and Amaala, a luxury wellness-focused development.
The Kingdom’s goal is ambitious: to attract 100 million visitors annually by 2030. Since opening to tourism in 2019, Saudi Arabia has become one of the fastest-growing markets, with a remarkable 93.5 million visits recorded in 2022.
Qiddiya: The World’s Largest Entertainment City
Qiddiya is set to redefine entertainment with its multibillion-dollar destination in Riyadh, poised to surpass even Walt Disney World in scale. This colossal project, envisioned by the Qiddiya Investment Company and designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, will offer over 400 facilities, including theme parks, water parks, and sports arenas.
One of its highlights is Aquarabia, the largest water park in the Middle East, featuring the world’s tallest water coaster and the longest mat racer. Another landmark is the $1 billion Six Flags Qiddiya City, which will boast the world’s tallest, longest, and fastest roller coaster, Falcons Flight.
“This project is a groundbreaking venture in entertainment, sport, and arts,” says Philippe Gas, a Disney veteran and former CEO of Qiddiya. “It is nearly three times the size of Walt Disney World and offers an unparalleled experience.”
Neom: A Visionary Land of the Future
Announced in 2017, Neom is a $500 billion “land of the future” that will be 33 times the size of New York City. It is designed to house cognitive cities, ports, research centers, and entertainment venues. Described as “the world’s most ambitious project,” Neom aims to welcome millions of visitors and redefine sustainable living.
Neom’s first luxury island, Sindalah, is set to open in early 2024, offering a marina, golf course, and luxury accommodations. Other notable features include The Line, a zero-carbon city, and Trojena, a mountain resort with a ski village.
“We are redefining the future now, addressing challenges with the brightest minds,” says Neom’s CEO, Nadhmi Al-Nasr. “Neom is open for business and ready to showcase what sustainable development can achieve.”
These projects, alongside others like The Red Sea and Roshn, are not just about infrastructure but are a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to becoming a global leader in tourism, entertainment, and sustainable development. With a focus on luxury, innovation, and sustainability, the Kingdom is paving the way for a prosperous future, inviting the world to witness and partake in its transformation.
